01 — Overview

Work on Siemens' internal design system: component architecture, tokens and reuse across several internal products.

03 — The Challenge

Siemens' internal design system needed to become more flexible and scalable across multiple internal products.

04 — My Role

Product Designer, working directly with the development team on system architecture, component structure and reuse.

05 — Discovery / Research

I worked with internal users and the development team to understand where the existing system created limitations and where components could become more flexible and reusable.

06 — Key Insights

A design system only becomes scalable when its underlying structure works for both designers and developers. Reusable components need to reflect real product needs and implementation constraints.

07 — Design Approach

Design systems, component libraries, design tokens, scalability and reuse — built in close collaboration with engineering so the system holds up in code, not only in Figma.

08 — Key Design Decisions

01 — Reorganise around reuse Restructured the component library to make patterns easier to reuse across internal products. 02 — Design for flexibility Considered how components could accommodate different product contexts without creating unnecessary variants. 03 — Work at the system level Focused on the architecture and relationships between components rather than isolated screens. 04 — Validate with real users Used internal-user interviews and usability testing to validate changes to the system.

09 — Final Solution

A reorganised and more flexible component library designed to support consistency and reuse across Siemens' internal product ecosystem.

10 — Outcome

Improved consistency, efficiency and component reuse across Siemens' internal products.

11 — Learnings

The best design systems aren't just collections of polished components. They are shared infrastructure. Their value comes from making good product decisions easier to repeat across teams and products.
