One Europe Design System — Santander
Creating consistency across banking products and four European markets.

Santander UI components — provided by Beatriz Paiva.
01 — Overview
A contribution to Santander's global design team on One Europe, a shared design system across four markets and three platforms.
03 — The Challenge
Santander needed one coherent design system serving Portuguese, Spanish, Polish and English teams across mobile, desktop and tablet.
04 — My Role
Design System contributor on Santander's global design team, working across components, templates, localization and cross-platform consistency.
05 — Discovery / Research
I validated proposed components and interactions through usability and accessibility testing, alongside click testing for new patterns such as Alert Management.
06 — Key Insights
A global design system needs to be consistent without becoming rigid. Components have to provide a shared foundation while still working across languages, platforms and local product requirements.
07 — Design Approach
Design systems, localisation, cross-platform consistency, accessibility and usability testing — with a focus on creating reusable patterns that could work across multiple markets.
08 — Key Design Decisions
01 — Design for multiple markets Considered localisation and different language requirements as part of the component design rather than an afterthought. 02 — Build reusable patterns Created component templates that could be consistently applied across products and platforms. 03 — Validate before scaling Used usability, accessibility and click testing to validate new components and interactions. 04 — Balance consistency and flexibility Created shared patterns while allowing teams across different markets to adapt them to their context.
09 — Final Solution
A scalable component and template library designed to create a consistent experience across mobile, desktop and tablet, while supporting four European markets.
10 — Outcome
Components and templates were adopted across Portugal, Spain, Poland and the UK, creating a shared design foundation across multiple teams and products.
11 — Learnings
The scale of a design system isn't measured by how many components it contains. It's measured by how well those components work across real products, teams, languages and constraints.
